Family caregivers do the work of the systems. A caregiving experience often begins with managing the 19 Caregiving Systems™ before actually providing care. During caregiving, family caregivers manage the complexity of the systems designed to serve themselves, not the people who depend on them.
When was the last time your caree's hospital discharge plan factored in your work responsibilities and availability? When the hospital determines the discharge, it takes into account your caree's insurance coverage rather than your availability to manage the discharge.
My dad thought the system should be doing the work for us.
In truth, we do the work for the system. Within those 19 Caregiving Systems™, family caregivers remain the only system without a reimbursement rate. Family caregivers also do the work without receiving support from the systems.
