We Have to Play by Rules That Keep Changing
We cooperate with systems that simply don't cooperate with us.
The Washington Post published an article this week, Assisted-living homes are rejecting Medicaid and evicting seniors, that will leave you both angry and anguished.
The article features interviews with older adults and their family members who spent money paying for housing and services in assisted living facilities under the agreement they would continue to reside at the facility when their money ran out and Medicaid becomes the payer.
Instead, facilities are changing the rules and asking residents to leave after they exhaust their ability to pay privately. These frail older adults must find new housing at a time when it’s very, very difficult to find a facility that will accept a Medicaid admission.
This nightmare is just one example of how we cooperate with the systems and the systems don’t cooperate with us. (Cooperation Fatigue is one of our Caregiving Fatigues; our free course, Healing Our Caregiving Fatigues, helps you work through 8 of the Caregiving Fatigues.)
It’s also why we feel so demoralized and powerless. Doing everything right doesn’t protect us from all that’s wrong within the 17 Caregiving Systems we navigate.
When have you cooperated with a system only to have the system make changes that create a nightmare for you?
